Evergreen Public School District

It is important to remember that students are taking classes to help them prepare for their life after high school. Students planning on going into the military or attending a trade school, certificate program, community college or a four-year public or private university should research the credits needed for entrance into these programs in order to be well prepared for success.

MATH REQUIREMENTS 2008-2012

Although lawmakers have “postponed” the passage of the math portion of the WASL until 2013, students still have requirements that must be fulfilled in order to graduate.  To earn* a high school diploma, (without a CAA), students must successfully complete approved math courses.  To earn* a high school diploma and CAA, students must pass the mathematics portion of the WASL.  (* Along with all other graduation requirements.)

For 2008 - 2012, students can still graduate if they have not met the WASL mathematics standard and earn a “High School Diploma” only if they:

a. Meet the reading and writing standards.

b. Meet all other state and school district graduation requirements.

c. For the class of 2008, earn one mathematics credit (or career and technical course equivalent, including appropriate courses offered at skills centers) after the student's 11th-grade year.  The student also must continue to take the mathematics WASL or a WAAS mathematics assessment annually.  For most students in the class of 2008 who will graduate on time, this means they need to earn one more mathematics credit and take one more assessment before graduation.  (1 credit = 2 classes.  Typically, this means a math class 1st semester for 1/2 credit and another math class 2nd semester for 1/2 credit.)

d. For the classes of 2009 - 2012, earn two mathematics credits (or career and technical course equivalent, including appropriate courses offered at the Skills Center School) after the student's 10th-grade year.  The student must also continue to take the mathematics WASL or a WAAS mathematics assessment annually.

The math course taken to earn the credit must be intended to increase the student’s mathematics proficiency toward meeting or exceeding the mathematics standards measured on the WASL.  The mathematics credits may be earned in certain career and technical education courses, including courses offered at skills centers.
