New elementary school to be named "Endeavour"

The Evergreen Public Schools' School Board has unanimously approved naming the district's newest elementary school Endeavour. The name was among three options chosen by the New School Naming Committee from over 45 name submissions. The other two potential names were Progress and Eva Santee.

Endeavour is the name of the first vessel commanded by Captain James Cook who is famous for his extraordinary skills in navigation and seamanship. His voyage on the Endeavour took him through the Pacific Ocean to places such as New Zealand. Despite hardship, disease and danger, Captain Cook brought the crew and ship to their goal. Like this famous captain and crew, the students at Endeavour Elementary will Endeavour to succeed. Endeavour is also the name of the space shuttle which carried Dr. Mae C. Jamison, the first African American woman ever to travel to outer space.

For the students at Endeavour Elementary, the word has several meanings: to strive; to reach; to work with a goal or purpose. In one word it describes every student's journey from Kindergarten to graduation.

Endeavour Elementary School will open Fall 2008.
