About 50 Native American EPS students took a unique field trip in October, touring the Confluence Land Bridge that links Fort Vancouver to the Columbia River. The bridge, which opened in 2008, restored a traditional Klickitat trail to the Columbia River that was severed by colonial infrastructure, including a railroad.
On the tour, students learned to identify tribes that utilized the area and recognize their language, food and art. They also learned about the significance of the Columbia River to native populations; how to identify native plants; and ways to think critically about colonization, land use and cultural resilience.
