Unified sports serve as a great way for students, staff and community to come together in the spirit of sportsmanship, camaraderie and competition. In EPS, basketball has become a popular sport in which students with and without intellectual disabilities can compete together.
In December, Pacific and Shahala middle schools came together for a Unified Basketball game. Athletes played in front of a great crowd at Pacific's gym. Both teams were introduced to loud cheers, and the Pacific cheerleaders held up signs with each player's name and uniform number. The officials were students who helped guide the action. The two teams will play again in February at Shahala's gym.
In January, the unified team at Mountain View High School played a 10-minute scrimmage in front of their classmates during an assembly. The scrimmage gave students a chance to cheer and enjoy the skills and competitiveness of the players.
